Vocabulary list #2



Accouterment- personal clothing, accessories, the equipment, excluding weapons and clothing, of a soldier. “When the troops relocated, many carried their accoutrements while the convoys carried their weapons.”
Apogee- apoapsis in Earth orbit; the point in its orbit where a satellite is at the greatest distance from the Earth; a final climactic stage “At the apogee, the space station lost signal from the satellite causing major panic.”

Apropos - of an appropriate or pertinent nature; by the way; at an opportune time “Most embarrassing moments happen at apropos, leaving a person scarred for life.”

Bicker - a quarrel about petty points; argue over petty things “Many couples bicker over simple issues causing unhappiness and regret.”

Coalesce - fuse or cause to grow together; mix together different elements “When making a cake or pie, you must coalesce a wide variety of ingredients.”

Contretemps- an awkward clash “Becky had a contretemps when running into her ex at the coffee shop.”

Convolution - the action of coiling or twisting or winding together; a convex fold or elevation in the surface of the brain; the shape of something rotating rapidly “In a giant snake pit, the snakes convolute with one another.”

Cull - the person or thing that is rejected or set aside as inferior in quality; remove something that has been rejected; look for and gather “In the historical age, many families of middle class were considered cull to the upper class.”

Disparate - including markedly dissimilar elements; fundamentally different or distinct in quality or kind “The rocks were disparate to one another.”

Dogmatic - characterized by assertion of unproved or unprovable principles; relating to or involving dogma; of or pertaining to or characteristic of a doctrine or code of beliefs accepted as authoritative “The Ten Commandments are an example of a dogmatic piece.”

Licentious - lacking moral discipline; especially sexually unrestrained “Rapists and sexual criminals lack licentious.”

Mete - a line that indicates a boundary “The mete indicated that the limits had been reached.”

Noxious - injurious to physical or mental health “Alcohol is one of the various noxious items that individuals overuse.”

Polemic - of or involving dispute or controversy; a controversy (especially over a belief or dogma); a writer who argues in opposition to others (especially in theology) “During our socratic seminar, our class split when a polemic erupted during a discussion of freedom”

Populous -  densely populated “Many areas today are to populous.”

Probity - complete and confirmed integrity; having strong moral principles “Most parents try to establish a probity in their households for their children.”

Repartee - adroitness and cleverness in reply “Matthew is repartee when arguing his point with another.”

Supervene - take place as an additional or unexpected development “The chandeliers became a supervene in the brides choice for lights in her wedding.”

Truncate - terminating abruptly by having or as if having an end or point cut off; make shorter as if by cutting off; approximate by ignoring all terms beyond a chosen one; replace a corner by a plane “The worker’s employment was truncated when the boss found him embezzling money.”

Unimpeachable - beyond doubt or reproach; completely acceptable; not open to exception or reproach; free of guilt; not subject to blame “The judge felt unimpeachable in the sentencing of the violent criminal.”
