Canterbury essay transmedia

Everyday people struggle with addictions. Whether it's drugs, sex, food, or gambling. Perkin the Reveller is the character in the Cook's Tale in the Canterbury novel written by Chaucer, and he also struggles with addiction in his life. Although the Cook's tale is left unfinished, we see the negative effects that the gambling and sex addiction has on Perkin. His addiction leads him to steal from his master which ultimately leads to his dismissal as an apprentice. This story is based on times of pilgrimage but the effects of sex and gambling addictions are still seen today.

This cartoon is an approach to see how a gambling addiction keeps pulling people in. An addiction is an addiction, once an individual gets hooked, it takes a lot to get them unhooked. Sometimes they start going over and beyond to get that "edge" or that "high" of their first moment. Sadly those do not understand that it will never be that way again. Gambling is targeted directly at individuals who are easily susceptible to addictions and majority of the time it gets its "target."

Perkin the Reveller didn't just suffer from a gambling addiction. He also had an addiction for sex and that was looked down strongly in that society. But using sex to get things have been used for centuries and is still used today. In the passage it mentions how one many had a wife who had a shop that she used to disguise her prostitution ring. Prostitution is quite common and preys on those who are easily addicted to sex, are unhappy in their relationships, or are just lonely.

Addictions lead people to do things the wouldn't normally do to achieve their "high" because that's all that matters to them, it's their whole world. Even when their left jobless or even homeless all they want to do is get that high again. Perkin the Reveller was just like humans are today. They lie and steal to achieve their own ends. Like his master said, "Better is a rotten apple kept out of the batch than one that rots the rest."

GREEN EGGS AND HAMLET

A) To be entirely honest I know not much about Hamlet except he was a great character in a Shakespeare play. Once I heard that the plot line of The Lion King was based on the Hamlet play but when asking around the AP class they looked at me in surprise.

B) Shakespeare was one of the greatest artists of literature and his plays have stood the test of time. He wrote tragic plays that didn't always have the traditional ending where the guy gets the girl.

C) Many students frown when hearing that they will be reading a Shakespearian work because they understand it will be difficult. Shakespeare used a unique diction and syntax that added a level of difficulty to his pieces and as an audience today we have a hard time understanding it. But with determination and the right teaching skills we can overcome the challenge and learn from it.

D) If we watch the play acted out and take it one piece at a time we will be able to understand the play with better comprehension. For me as a visual learner, it takes one time to see something and then learning it becomes so much easier. Hearing and reading things make it harder to grasp.

THE POINT OF CANTERBURY TALES IS..

Canterbury tales shows us that diverse city is rich in our society and that we shouldn't base and individual solely on a stereotype. Each person has their own story that makes them unique. Taking the time to get to know someone rather then basing your entire opinion on them by what others say gives a person knowledge.

CHARACTER STUDY (II)

When life calls you to an adventure you got to take it head on. Her time at Cal Poly was short when her adventure called her. She was studying biology when one day her professor asks her to come into his office hours because he was something that he believe she needs to see. As she walks in she is surprised to see her professor packing up his office. He looks up as she knocks on the door.

"Oh hello Lilly I hope you haven't been standing their to long." He states as he stacks more books into boxes.

" Hey Professor Segura. No I haven't I just got here. What's going on ?" She asks fearing the worst.

"Well there has been a new development in my research of mountain mammals and I'm going up North with a team to look at a species of wolves that are rumored to be new species. I asked you here because I would like you to come along with me. I know it is odd to ask but you always worked hard in my class and I think you would enjoy this opportunity very much. I know it is close to the end of the term and you probably have things you planned but I really need your help." Professor Segura looked up from his packing waiting for a response.

Lilly looked at her professor afraid to say no but she knows she doesn't have the time due to the fact that she planned a trip to South Carolina to visit family. "To be honest," she said with a frown, "I have planned a trip to go to South Carolina to visit family and I don't think I will have the time."

Her professor looked at her disappointed, "I was really hoping you would come with me. I'm going up with professors from Berkley, San Francisco Medical School, UCLA and USC. This would have been a great time to but your name out there and get noticed by professors seeing as you are looking into medical schools.Plus I was going to offer you extra credit just in time to bring your B to an A."

"But I had an A already?!" she said shocked and upset, "How come my grade switched?"

"As you know, as a professor I have to the say in all final grades and if you choose not to go with me and participate, I'll have to take away your class participation and bring your grade lower." Professor Segura said, looking slightly guilty. "Please I really need you to come with me. I already have your plane ticket and everything is paid. I just need you to come with me as my choice student. All the other professors choose students from their class and I'd like for you to be mine."

Lilly stood, stunned by the blackmail her teacher was pulling on her. She didn't want to go she'd have to change her whole plans. She knew she could try turning her teacher in and attempt to reverse the grade. Her 4.0 hung in the balance. Finally with a sigh she agreed to go with him.

"When do we leave and what do I need to bring?" She asked disappointed.

"Honestly we leave in two hours. We need to go to the Santa Maria airport right now all the other professors are already there waiting." He said as he stacked the last boxes on the cart.

"But I have nothing!" she exclaimed in disbelief. "No clothes, no nothing! I'm nowhere near ready to go."

"Neither am I," said Professor Segura as he walked out the door. "All I have to do put this in the storage closet then were off. I know this is fast and last minute but nobody was prepared for this. The universities gave no warning of our sudden departure but there is no time to lose. They said we leave now or we don't leave at all. All the other professors and students have taken flights to Santa Maria and we are all boarding a plane that will take us North. Once there we are supposed to jump on another flight to a boarder town near Canada where we will set up base with a group already there. Once there we will go get clothes and all the necessities we will need. This is being paid for by the universities all the clothes and everything."

Lilly was shocked by the sudden need for departure but the time for backing out had already passed she was in this whether she liked it or not. She helped Professor Segura get his stuff into the closet. As they walked out to the cars she started wondering what they were going to do with their cars.

"We will take yours to the airport and we will have to ask your family to come get it once we leave. My wife is going to get my car here," the professor explained.

As they got into the car Lilly apologized for the mess. The professor said it was nothing compared to his car and off they went. Once they arrived at the airport, they saw all the other professors standing outside waiting for them. Lilly's stomach began to turn with fear, excitement and nerves. All subsided when she recognized a familiar face in the crowd. She was surprised to relieved to see that the professor from UC Berkley had chosen Naimoi to come along. She ran and gave her a hug and explained how relieved she was that she had someone on this trip she already knew.

"Alright lets go check in and get a move on. We don't have much time before we need to be off," directed the UCLA professor.

Once checked in they all stood around and socialized learning each others names and getting first impressions. Lilly also used this time to fill in her family. Lilly learned that the bossy Professor from UCLA was named Professor Ortiz, the shy female professor from USC was Professor Ramierz, the overexcited professor from Berkley was Professor Hernadez and the Medical Professor was Professor Williams. Naimoi and Lilly filled each other in on their recent activities at the universities. Naimoi was in several of Lilly's classes senior year and they got along very well especially towards the beginning.

"Flight 253 to Sacramento now boarding." said the overcom.

Lilly and Naimoi shared terrified looks and followed their professors to the gate which lead to their unknown adventure.

BIG QUESTION

I have considered many options about my big question. I have finally decided to revise my big question and focus on subjects that would most interest myself. As a perspiring emergency physician I don't wanted to do something with emergency medicine but I'm also really into space with the planets and the stars. So my big question is...

Is there a career for emergency physician on or in the NASA astronaut program?

Are there ways for emergency physicians to be on the space station to take care of the astronauts?

Is it possible for an emergency physician to do an adequate job while in space?

What types of medicines do they have in the space station?

CHARACTER STUDY (I)

The life she has planned and has worked her whole high school career for has finally taken off. It's been a year since you received that life-changing letter that started it all. Here she is studying at Cal poly State University getting a bachelors degree and biological sciences. All the hours of volunteering all the countless nights of scholarship applications all the sleepless dreams of finally receiving the letter have paid off. She has made her dream come true and she is determined and dedicated to finish out her life dream of becoming an emergency physician. She can still that day when it all became reality.

It was close to finals of the first semester of your senior year she's been working hard to prove to everyone else that she wasn't who she appeared to be. It was December 17 she was expecting a letter any day from her dream school, Cal poly State University. She had applied for early decision and each day checked the mail for the letter that would make it all possible for her. She knew she said a chance she knew she could make it but in her mind there was still that little piece of self-conscious. She didn't think that she was smart enough to get into Cal poly and she was afraid of letting down those around her but her mother always said, "Put it in gods hands. What's his plan will happen and you just have to live with the rest of it." She soon began to doubt her's self even more with each passing day of no response from her dream school. Then when she was just about to fear the worst she got her letter in the mail. She looked at the seal and instantly ran inside, clutching the letter for dear life. Her parents were both still asleep at they have both worked the day before she tore the letter open in her room but paused too afraid to open the letter because she was too afraid to know if she had gotten rejected or excepted. She knew there was no point in delaying the inevitable. She unfolded the letter and began reading the first sentence.

"Dear Lillyana Navarrete,
It is our pleasure to inform you that you have been excepted into California Polytechnic State University."

She collapsed to her knees and cried. Not out of sadness but out of pure happiness for the first time in her life in years. She ran to her room and woke her parents up on the screamed , "I did it I finally did it!" At first your parents weren't understanding what was going on, they were almost a little bit too grumpy from being woken up from their slumber. However once she read and reread the first sentence of the letter they both began to cry out of pride. Her mom hugged her tightly and said with a laugh, "I always had faith in you I knew you were going to do it from the start. I'm so proud of you."

Looking back on the day, she grams and soundly last herself. That long awaited letter. The one that let her start the beginning of her life, the one that made all of her dreams possible in 20 words. She knows that the road ahead is long, up to 10 years before she will be where she wants to be but she knows that The next 10 years will be the greatest years full adventure learning and the opportunity to grow as a person. The next 10 years will lead to a life that will be dictated by her.
